5 Days Riding

Gus RidingWe ask Angus Robinson about mountain biking and mental health – thank you Angus, great story.

“5 days riding, 1 life changing day.

Mountain biking in Madeira – that life changing day was one of the best day’s riding I’ve had anywhere – I can feel the effects as I write.

I was coming back from a crash that smashed my shoulder, followed by a damaged back which at some points limited me to walking about 100m at a time.  I’d hardly ridden for the previous 11 months to this trip.  It was a very big moment for me.

The Madeira trip was with a group of guys that I’ve known for a long time.  We’re very close and ride together in many places around the world.  This particular trip was one of the biggest tests of my physical fitness and ability, feeling well out of my comfort zone, I took it easy for the first few days, building my confidence as I went.

The final day it all came together.  What a day!!!  World class trails, beautiful scenery and amazing company.

All the emotions of the previous 11 months came to the surface, all the trials, all the work at getting better, all the physical pain.

What does this mean for mental health?  For me it means never ever give up, no matter how rubbish it may be.  It would have been very easy to say my biking days are over.

When I work really hard at getting fit, it pays off – the pain is only temporary.  When I push myself well out of my comfort zone, something amazing can happen.”

When you push yourself out of your comfort zone, where does it take you?
